Psychotherapy, The Wild Atlantic Way

Joanne Hanrahan

About Me

I am a Psychotherapist with a background in Career Guidance and Counselling. Both professions have allowed me to make real connections with people and bear witness to the pain, anxiety, stress and deep hurt that we all experience, for periods, as we journey through life. I count myself lucky that I have spent my career truly embracing the uniqueness of the individual and cherishing my relationship with each and every client. Having worked for over 25 years in the field of Counselling & Psychotherapy, the courage of the adults and adolescents I have met has inspired my ongoing personal and professional development in this very privileged and relational work.

My Qualifications

I have completed five years of post graduate study in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy including a Masters from Dublin City University & Turning Point Institute. My MSc research was in the area of Outdoor Therapy and Nature Based Health, and I have presented my findings and clinical practice at a number of International Conferences. I have developed and now run both in person and online courses for mental health practitioners who wish to embrace nature more in their work.

As a strong believer in Lifelong Learning, I have most recently completed a four year advanced Postgraduate Professional Training in Somatic Experiencing (SE) and considerable training in Polyvagal Theory. Hence I have developed skills in these internationally regarded Psychobiological approaches to Trauma Resolution.  With a keen interest in nature’s regulating properties and ongoing research in ‘Green Care’ I bring my knowledge of both trauma and ‘Ecotherapy’ to my practice and offer both indoor and outdoor sessions to my clients and supervisees. I regularly facilitate workshops and trainings, on a variety of topics, in the Corporate, Educational and Mental Health sectors both in Ireland, UK, Europe and Asia.

I have also completed a post graduate diploma in Clinical Supervision and Reflective Practice, as well as a graduate diploma in Guidance & Counselling. Additional training include Outdoor Psychotherapy, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Jungian Sand Therapy, 'Psychotherapy & Mental Health Diagnosis', and ASIST Suicide Prevention.
